ACTS Prayer

ACTS Prayer

A – Adoration: it’s this focus on God. It’s an opportunity to reflect on who God is, to praise Him and give honour to Him.

Here’s two ideas of how to keep you focused on this idea of adoration: Pick one (or both) to help keep you focused each day on the topic of Adoration in your time of prayer:

1. Select from these passages (choose 1 per day):

Psalm 99; Psalm 29; Psalm 68:35; 1 Chronicles 29:10-19; Psalm 147:1-5; Lamentations 3:22-23; 1 Corinthians 1:9; Titus 2:11; Ephesians 2:4-5; Psalm 145; Psalm 146; Nehemiah 9:5; Psalm 103; Psalm 27

2. Read through the passage as a prayer to God. Make note of where you see the authour praising God.

3. Use the examples of praise as a ‘springboard’ for your own praise

4. End with a time of praising God of whatever comes to mind – ex: His character, love, faithfulness, mercy …

OR

Reflect on an attribute of God, read/study the Scripture that goes with it and use it to go into a time of praising God because of it:

His Faithfulness – 1 Cor 1:9                              His Grace – Titus 2:11

His Glory – Psalm 19:1                                     His Mercy – Eph 2:4-5

His Awesomeness – Psalm 68:35                    His steadfast Love – Lam 2:22-23

His wisdom – Psalm 147:5

C – Confessionthis is an opportunity to be asking God for forgiveness. Confession means to humble yourself before God and to confess your sins and ask for God’s forgiveness.

Confession isn’t meant to make us feel bad for what we’ve done, to beat ourselves up, to live in our shame, no. It’s this powerful means of entering more deeply into our relationship with God. Confession opens us up to the powerful ways in which God can transform the deepest parts of our life.

Scripture to read and study:

Psalm 51:1-13; 1 John 1:4-9; Psalm 32:1-5; Psalm 103; Psalm 139:23-24; Jeremiah 31:34; Proverbs 28:13; Daniel 9:1-19

* Pray God would make you increasingly aware of your own sin

* Ask God to search you and reveal to you any sin that needs to be repented of

A Prayer of Confession that could help this week:

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed by what we have done, and by what we have left undone, We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen

T – Thanksgivingit’s the idea of being grateful for God’s blessings in our lives.

There is a difference between adoration and thanksgiving, adoration looks at who God is, His character. Where thanksgiving reflects on what God has done for us.

Scripture to read and mediate on:

James 1:2-3; Ephesians 5:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Psalm 7:17; Psalm 35:18; Psalm 52:9; Psalm 100; Psalm 106:1; Psalm 107; Psalm 108:8-9; Psalm 109:30-32; Psalm 23; Matthew 6:25-33; Hebrews 13:15

* After reading and mediating on a Scripture, write down at least one thought that stands out to you about thanksgiving

* Write down what you are thankful for about God, what you are thankful for in your life, family, marriage, relationships, work, FBC … at the end of the week look back over your list of thanksgiving

* Call, email, write, text … at least one person that you are thankful for and tell them why

S – Supplication – this is where you are presenting your prayer requests to God.

It’s a good time to examine how we approach God in prayer. Do we go in with our list of demands? Or do we approach God humbly to present our petitions to Him? Previous 3 steps help to place us in the right mindset to come to God

Scripture to read and mediate on:

1 Peter 5:7; Matthew 21:22; Psalm 145:18; Psalm 4:1; Philippians 4:6; 1 Timothy 2:1-4

What are some things you can bring to God on behalf of yourself, family, First Baptist, Port Alberni?
